Located to the east of Chojeondong, the lower stretch of the Jinju Namgang River features wide, calm waters and sandy shores, creating a distinctive natural panorama. To the west, Seonhaksan Mountain frames the site, positioning it between the river and the mountainous landscape. The stable horizontal alignment of the mountain and river is a key environmental asset. Thus, integrating the vertical order of the residential complex with these natural vistas is a central design consideration.

The main access to Jangjae Park has a steep incline with a 26m height difference. As one ascends, a gradual promenade unfolds. The library serves as a key element, connecting the apartment complex’s vertical structure with the park’s horizontal spaces. It rises around an atrium, linking to the external courtyards and walking paths. Layered bookshelves create a space that integrates seamlessly with the community’s daily life.

초전동 동쪽에 위치한 진주 남강 하류는 특유의 넓은 강 폭과 잔잔한 물살, 일부 남아 있는 모래사장이 고유의 풍경을 이루고 있다. 낮고 길게 펼쳐진 선학산(장재공원계획)이 부지 서측에 위치하여 대지는 남강 하류와 선학산 풍경 사이에 놓이게 된다. 산과 강이 만들어 내는 안정적인 수평성은 중요한 환경적 가치이다. 펼쳐진 자연의 풍경과 아파트 단지가 만들어내는 수직적 질서에 대한 해석이 설계의 핵심적인 관점이 되었다. 

부지 내에 연속되어 이어진 장재공원의 주 진입로는 26m 높이 차의 가파른 경사를 가지고 있지만, 이 경사를 오르고 나면 완만한 산책로가 펼쳐진다. 도서관은 아파트 단지의 수직적 질서와 공원의 수평적 공간 사이에서 도시 스케일의 전환이 일어나는 장소가 된다. 도서관은 아트리움을 중심으로 점이적으로 상승하고 확장되며, 이 아트리움은 각 층의 외부 마당으로 연속되어 산책로와 연결된다. 적층되어 펼쳐진 서가들은 책들로 이루어진 언덕길처럼 구성되어, 마을 주민들이 자연스럽게 향유할 수 있는 공간으로 자리잡는다.
